Tour overview

A short 8 day birdwatching  trip to PNG staying at two of the countries most prestigious lodges, Rondon Ridge near Mt Hagen and Ambua up in Hela  Province both in the central mountain chain. With a number of Birds of Paradise and a good range of high altitude species these areas are a must for any serious birder and this tour offers birding at a level of comfort not often found in PNG.

Although primarily designed for birders both of these lodges also offer cultural experiences making this a tour that the whole family could enjoy.

While there are some steep and muddy trails to be negotiated for some species much of the birding can be done along the road and in the lodge grounds. Half day trips into the surrounding countryside are often along dirt roads but distances are not great.

Rondon Ridge and Ambua are two of PNGs premier lodges. All guest rooms are en suite and have added extras such as electric blankets for those cold Highland nights. While you still have to be prepared for the unexpected usually the lodges work and there is hot water, transport does arrive when requested and the menus make interesting use of local produce.
