Tour overview

A short 7 day birdwatching  trip to the island of New Britain, part of the Bismarcks of the eastern end of the PNG mainland. Staying in Rabaul in East New Britain and at the famous Walindi Dive Resort in West New Britain there is access to a large number of habitats and height bands.

Although primarily designed for birders both of these areas also offer alternative activities with Walindi being good for diving and snorkelling  and Rabaul while offering both these experiences also has a very interesting active volcano and a number of war sites. In addition the Mask Festival held in July each year makes this a making this a tour that the whole family could enjoy.

Tour Accommodation

Walindi Lodge is an extremely comfortable lodge in the idyllic setting of Kimbe Bay. Primarily a dive resort it is popular with birders as it allows access to areas of lowland rainforest with a number of New Britain specialities. Unfortunately in recent years oil palms have been planted all around it and we have to travel out of this bird desert to find the native forest with a better assemblage of species. Bismarck Crow can be found around the bungalows and further afield we hope for Black-headed Paradise KingfisherNew Britain Kingfisher, Blue-eyed Cockatoo, Red-knobbed Imperial Pigeon, Knob-billed Fruit-dove and New Britain Friarbird and more. In Rabaul we will be staying in a friendly and relaxed western style hotel.

Tour Difficulty

While there are some steep and muddy trails to be negotiated for some species much of the birding can be done along the road and in the lodge grounds. Half day trips into the surrounding countryside are often along dirt roads which are often not well maintained, but distances are not great.
