Tour overview

An exciting 14 day tour which includes some of the more rarely visited parts of Sulawesi including Sangihe for the 4 rare and restricted range endemics found there (including Sangihe Shrike-thrush and perhaps Cerulean Paradise Flycatcher) and Mt Mahawu for the Scaly-breasted Kingfisher and nightbirds.

It also includes the island of Halmahera with many endemics including the two most easterly birds of Paradise, Wallace’s Standardwing and Paradise Crow, plus Ivory-breasted Pitta, Moluccan Owlet-nightjar, Goliath Coucal and many more. Visiting the national parks of Lore Lindu, Tangkoko and Gunung Ambang in Sulawesi we hope to see 6 species of endemic parrot, 5 endemic kingfishers, 2 species of hornbill, 4 endemic starling and the only representative of Hylocitridae, the Yellow-flanked Whistler, plus many more exciting birds.

The main tour is of moderate level of difficulty. While the walking is not excessive there will be a fair amount of it. The trails vary from easy level strolls to moderate climbs. On Halmahera in particular trails can be uneven and may be quite muddy and steep in sections, with one shallow river crossing and a few small streams. Travel will be largely be by minibus. The Weather will be hot and humid.

Accommodations will be a mixture of western type hotels in the larger towns, and more usually local guesthouses with Indonesian type bathrooms and usually no hot water. While there will usually be fans, air-conditioning will not always be available.
