Tour overview

[6th – 10th January 2020]

For those with time constraints or wishing to visit Cape York during the “Wet” for the migratory New Guinea birding specials such as Red-bellied Pitta, which migrate south then this short guided birding tour offers an excellent introduction to Iron Range birds. The Iron Range area has a good variety of habitats including mangroves, heathland, rainforest, vine forest and the coast so there is lots on offer to look at. Iron range has a number of bird species that cannot be seen elsewhere in Australia such as the New Guinea “specials” like Eclectus ParrotPalm Cockatoo and Yellow-billed Kingfisher.

In Lockhart River we will be staying at either Portland House or Iron Range Cabins. Portland House has air-conditioning in the bedrooms but the bathroom is shared by the whole group. Iron Range Cabins has comfortable self-contained accommodation close to the airfield and the national park entrance at Lockhart River.

This tour is doable for most people. There is some driving on dirt roads but distances are not great and there are no long hikes involved.
