This 6 day short tour divides its time between the island of Rennell and the area around Honiara on Guadalcanal. Rennell is the largest raised atoll in the world and has 43 species of breeding birds with 6 species being endemic, plus 11 species of bat including 1 endemic. Extra days can easily be added for further exploration of either area.
Lake Tengano in the eastern part of Rennell was the former lagoon of the atoll and has many islands. Mt Austen on Gudalacanal is quite easy to cover along the roads and is well worth more than a single visit.
There are no long steep hikes on this tour. On Guadalcanal most of the birding is done from the roadsides. On Rennell there are a number of logging tracks running into the forest patches, but the surface of these tracks, and the forest floor, is uneven coral rag which can make walking difficult at times.
