Indonesian New Guinea (West Papua)
Western New Guinea is also known as Papua (previously Irian Jaya) and West Papua. It is part of the island of New Guinea and was annexed by Indonesia in 1962. Its territory includes nearby islands and includes the Schouten & Raja Ampat archipelagoes. It is predominately covered with ancient rainforests which are inhabited by numbers traditional tribes. The offical language is Indonesian but an estimated 200 to 700 tribal languages are still spoken in region.
It has approximately 700 bird species of which approximately 450 are endemic.
