Cape York Iron Range FIFO Birdwatching Tour – Papuan Pitta Special

Rainy Season Birding in Northern Australia

With the arrival of the wet season, several bird species usually resident in New Guinea migrate south into Australia. These include the Papuan (Red-bellied) Pitta, Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, and Black-winged Monarch. As the rains ease, they return north again. While the kingfisher often reaches as far south as Cairns, the pitta and monarch typically remain within the Iron Range region.

In contrast, many of the New Guinea “specials” that can’t be seen anywhere else in Australia are resident in the Iron Range year-round. These include:

  • Eclectus Parrot

  • Red-cheeked Parrot

  • Palm Cockatoo

  • Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo

  • Yellow-billed Kingfisher

  • Fawn-breasted Bowerbird

  • Magnificent Riflebird

  • Trumpet Manucode

  • Tropical Scrubwren

  • Green-backed Honeyeater

  • Tawny-breasted Honeyeater

  • Black-eared Catbird

  • Frilled Monarch

These iconic species make the Iron Range one of Australia’s premier destinations for tropical birdwatching.

Iconic Birds of the Iron Range Region:

  • Papuan (Red-bellied) Pitta
A stunning rainforest ground-dweller with vivid red underparts and a bold green back, most often heard before seen during the wet season.

  • Magnificent Riflebird
One of Australia’s birds-of-paradise, the male displays iridescent blue-black plumage in spectacular courtship dances.

  • Palm Cockatoo
A striking, large black cockatoo with a red cheek patch and a powerful beak — famous for its drumming displays on hollow trees.

  • Red Goshawk
One of Australia’s rarest raptors, this powerful hunter is a top predator in the open woodlands of northern Australia.

  • White-streaked Honeyeater
A Cape York specialty, this honeyeater is often found feeding high in the canopy, recognised by its bold facial streaks and fast movements.

  • Red-cheeked Parrot
A vibrant, noisy parrot with a bright green body and distinctive red cheeks, shared with nearby New Guinea but rarely seen elsewhere in Australia.

  • Frill-necked Monarch
A striking tropical monarch with a bold black-and-white pattern and a flared “frill” when excited—often flits through vine forests and thickets.

  • Marbled Frogmouth
A rare, nocturnal master of camouflage found in rainforest gullies. Its marbled plumage blends perfectly with tree bark during the day.

  • Star Finch
A beautifully marked finch with a red face and white spotting across the chest, typically seen in small flocks near grassy wetlands.

  • Trumpet Manucode
A large, glossy bird-of-paradise with a deep, resonant call—its rich, iridescent feathers and haunting vocalisations make it a standout in the canopy.

  • Eclectus Parrot
One of the most sexually dimorphic parrots in the world—males are bright green, females rich red and blue; both are stunning rainforest dwellers.

  • Black-eared Catbird
A secretive, fruit-loving bird of the rainforest with a cat-like call and a bold black facial patch; part of the bowerbird family.

  • Yellow-billed Kingfisher
A rainforest kingfisher with a vivid yellow-orange bill and golden underparts—its piping call often gives away its presence before it’s seen.

  • Fawn-breasted Bowerbird
Known for its buff-colored breast and intricate stick bowers built by males to attract mates—most often found in savannah and open forests.

  • Northern Scrub-robin
A shy ground-dweller with a rich song and bold tail-flicking behavior—typically seen foraging in dry forest leaf litter.

  • Green-backed Honeyeater
A canopy-loving honeyeater with olive-green plumage and a quick, jerky foraging style—often found in the lowland rainforests of Cape York.
