Featured Birding Areas
Varirata National Park
Set in the foothills above Port Moresby, Varirata National Park is one of Papua New Guinea’s most accessible and rewarding birding sites. Its mix of savanna, forest edge and hill rainforest provides an excellent introduction to New Guinea birding, with possibilities including Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise, Brown-headed Paradise Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Hooded Pitohui, fruit doves, parrots and a variety of forest species.
Varirata is often included at the beginning or end of PNG itineraries, making it a valuable site for both first-time visitors and returning birders. Despite its proximity to Port Moresby, the park offers a real taste of New Guinea’s forest birdlife and can be highly productive with patient birding.
Kiunga & the Fly River Lowlands
The lowland forests around Kiunga and the Fly River are among the most exciting birding areas in Papua New Guinea. This region offers access to rich rainforest, river systems, oxbow lakes and remote forest trails, supporting an exceptional range of lowland specialists.
Birding here may include Flame Bowerbird, Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise, Greater Bird-of-Paradise, King Bird-of-Paradise, Palm Cockatoo, Pesquet’s Parrot, Southern Crowned Pigeon, forest kingfishers, hornbills, fruit doves and many other lowland species. Boat trips along the Fly and Elevala Rivers add a wonderful sense of adventure and are often among the most memorable parts of a PNG birding tour.
Tabubil & the Star Mountains Foothills
Located near the border with West Papua, Tabubil provides access to foothill and lower montane forests on the edge of the Star Mountains. This is one of PNG’s most exciting and bird-rich regions, with a different suite of species from both the lowlands and the central Highlands.
The forests and roads around Tabubil can produce species such as Carola’s Parotia, Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise, Queen Carola’s Parotia, Black Sicklebill, Shovel-billed Kookaburra, Torrent-lark, Salvadori’s Teal, bowerbirds, parrots and a wide variety of mixed-flock species. Road conditions and weather can influence daily plans, but the birding potential is outstanding.
Kumul Lodge & the Western Highlands
The Highlands around Mount Hagen and Kumul Lodge are among the classic birding areas of Papua New Guinea. Cool montane forest, mossy tracks and high-elevation habitats support a spectacular range of New Guinea mountain birds, with several species often seen close to the lodge.
This region is famous for Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise, Brown Sicklebill, Princess Stephanie’s Astrapia, Loria’s Satinbird, Brehm’s Tiger Parrot, Blue-capped Ifrit, Crested Satinbird, Island Thrush and many other highland specialties. Kumul is also a comfortable and atmospheric base for exploring the surrounding forests and nearby higher-altitude sites.
Tari, Ambua & the Southern Highlands
The Tari Valley and surrounding Southern Highlands are legendary among birders, offering access to some of New Guinea’s most spectacular mountain birds. Montane forest, forest edge, grasslands and higher ridges provide habitat for a remarkable variety of Birds-of-Paradise and highland endemics.
Key species may include Blue Bird-of-Paradise, King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise, Short-tailed Paradigalla, Brown Sicklebill, Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, Stephanie’s Astrapia, Lawe’s Parotia, Wattled Ploughbill, Black Sitella, Papuan Lorikeet and many more. The scenery is dramatic, the culture is rich, and the birding can be exceptional.
New Britain
The island of New Britain offers a very different birding experience from mainland Papua New Guinea, with lowland forest, coastal habitats, volcanic landscapes and a suite of island endemics. Based around areas such as Walindi and the forests of West New Britain, birders can search for species found nowhere else.
Highlights may include Blue-eyed Cockatoo, Nicobar Pigeon, Black-capped Paradise Kingfisher, New Britain Boobook, New Britain Dwarf Kingfisher, Yellowish Imperial Pigeon, Bismarck Kingfisher, Ashy Myzomela and other Bismarck specialties. New Britain can also combine well with cultural experiences, forest birding, night birding and marine activities.

What is the best time to visit Papua New Guinea for birdwatching?
The best time for birdwatching in Papua New Guinea is generally May to the end of September. This period usually offers the most favourable conditions for birding, with many tours timed to coincide with good weather, active bird behaviour and strong opportunities to see Birds-of-Paradise and other New Guinea endemics.
Do I need to be an experienced birder?
Not at all. Our tours are suitable for anyone with an interest in birds, wildlife and nature. Whether you’re new to birdwatching or an experienced world birder, our itineraries are designed to provide rewarding experiences for a range of skill levels.
Which Birds-of-Paradise can I expect to see?
The species seen depend on the itinerary and the regions visited. Many of our tours target iconic species such as Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise, King Bird-of-Paradise, Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise, Blue Bird-of-Paradise, Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise and several others. Each itinerary includes a list of the key target species.
Is Papua New Guinea safe to visit?
Yes. We use experienced local guides, trusted accommodation providers and well-planned logistics throughout our tours. Like travel anywhere in the world, sensible precautions should always be taken, and we provide detailed pre-departure information to help you prepare.
What level of fitness is required?
Most tours require a moderate level of fitness. Birding often involves walking on uneven forest tracks, mountain trails and village paths, sometimes in warm, humid conditions. Individual tour itineraries include detailed information about the physical requirements.
What should I bring?
We recommend lightweight field clothing, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, camera equipment, insect repellent, rain protection and any personal medications. A detailed packing list is included with every tour itinerary.
Can I join as a solo traveller?
Absolutely. Many of our guests travel solo. Single supplements are available on most tours, while some departures may offer shared accommodation where appropriate.
Do you offer private and customised tours?
Yes. We regularly design private birding itineraries for individuals, couples, photography groups and small groups of friends. Custom tours can be tailored to specific target species, photography interests, cultural experiences or travel dates.
What wildlife can I expect besides birds?
Although Papua New Guinea’s mammals can be elusive, many tours also offer opportunities to see flying-foxes, wallabies, cuscus, tree-kangaroos and a fascinating variety of butterflies, reptiles and orchids. Wildlife sightings vary between regions and seasons.
