From the forest clad heights of the Himalayas in the north to the aridity of the Deccan plateau or the lush forests of the Western Ghats, India’s diversity of habitat means it has a huge bird list. Around 1260 species of birds can be seen in India and 54 of these are endemics. It also has an excellent list of other wildlife with tigers, elephants, rhinos being high on everyone’s list. Add to this a fascinating culture and one of the world’s great cuisines it is obvious that India is well worth a visit. In fact several visits will be necessary to really do the country justice and it is very easy to get addicted to the place.

This 18 day birdwatching tour in northeastern India takes us to a number of low altitude national parks where a variety of birds and mammals can be seen, up into the foothills of the Himalayas on the border with Bhutan. A world class birding area, Eagles Nest Sanctuary is famous for the variety, numbers and accessibility of the bird species found there.

Over 450 species of have been observed in the Eagles Nest area and the surrounding higher altitude forests. In addition it is home to some great mammals including Asiatic Elephant whilst butterflies, amphibians and reptiles are also represented.
