The mountains of Taiwan are home to the majority of the island’s endemic birds, along with a number of widespread Asian species. Among the most sought-after endemics are the spectacular Swinhoe’s Pheasant and Mikado Pheasant, along with Taiwan Hill Partridge, Taiwan Bamboo Partridge, Flamecrest, Taiwan Rosefinch, Steere’s Liocichla, and White-whiskered Laughing Thrush. These iconic species make Taiwan’s highlands a must-visit for birdwatchers.
In addition to the endemics, the region also supports a variety of non-endemic specialties. Birders may encounter Alpine Accentor, Spotted Nutcracker, Rufous-faced Warbler, White-backed Woodpecker, and the elusive Himalayan Owl. Together, this mix of species creates a diverse and rewarding birding experience.
Beyond the birds, the mountains shelter over 30 species of large mammals, including bear, wild boar, and deer—although sightings of these are less common. In the highlands, star attractions include the dazzling Swinhoe’s Pheasant and the majestic Mikado Pheasant, two of Taiwan’s most iconic birds. Other highlights include Taiwan Partridge, Black-necklaced Scimitar-Babbler, Taiwan Cupwing, and many more. Depending on the season, we’ll also encounter a variety of Palearctic migrants, with spring adding an extra layer of excitement to the species list. Mammals such as the agile Taiwan Serow and the distinctive White-headed Flying Squirrel may also make an appearance.
The western lowlands contrast beautifully with the mountains, offering species such as the striking Taiwan Blue Magpie, the colourful Taiwan Barbet, the cheerful Collared Finchbill, and the bold Grey-headed Barbet.
