About Birder.Travel: Ethical Birding & Wildlife Tours
Our History
Sicklebill Safaris / Birder.Travel is a small, family-run ethical birding tour operator based in North Queensland, Australia. With over 25 years of experience in the Pacific region, we’ve expanded to offer expert-led itineraries across Australia, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. While we offer a range of ready-made tours, we specialise in designing customised birding, wildlife, and cultural experiences for individuals and small groups — both guided and self-guided — who seek immersive, responsible travel in nature-rich destinations.
Sicklebill Safaris was founded to bring small groups of visitors to Papua New Guinea to experience its remarkable biodiversity and rich cultural heritage. The region is home to over 400 endemic bird species, making it one of the world’s most unique birding destinations. From the beginning, we’ve supported locally owned, low-impact, and sustainable tourism initiatives—working with local guides whenever possible to provide income alternatives to logging and palm oil plantations. We’ve long championed the involvement of local communities in all aspects of eco-tourism. In PNG, we collaborate closely with landowners to establish locally run lodges in key birding areas and provide training for local guides. In the Solomon Islands, we work with tourism bodies to promote responsible birding, wildlife, and cultural tourism, and for many years have run local guide training workshops so that each major birding destination has access to trained guides while supporting the growth of community-based ecotourism.
Cassowary Tours a subsidiary of Sicklebill Safaris based in Topaz, offers day trips and short accommodated tours throughout Northern Queensland.
Visit our Scheduled Tours section to see upcoming departures to a variety of destinations. Don’t see anything currently listed? Feel free to enquire anyway — we’re happy to organise custom departures and can promote your dates for others to join. This is how many of our trips come together!
