Featured Birding Areas
Hokkaido
Japan’s northernmost island is one of the world’s premier winter birding destinations. Snow-covered landscapes, drift ice along the Sea of Okhotsk and vast coastal wetlands create spectacular scenery and exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Here, visitors can witness the elegant courtship displays of Red-crowned Cranes, watch Steller’s Sea Eagles and White-tailed Eagles perched on ice floes, and search for the legendary Blakiston’s Fish Owl as it hunts along unfrozen streams after dark.
The surrounding seas are equally rewarding, supporting impressive numbers of seaducks, alcids, gulls and seabirds, while marine mammals such as Sea Otters, Harbour Seals, Dall’s Porpoises and occasionally Killer Whales add to the experience. Combining iconic wildlife with breathtaking winter scenery, Hokkaido offers one of the finest birding experiences anywhere in the world.
Honshu
As Japan’s largest island, Honshu boasts an extraordinary diversity of habitats, from productive coastal wetlands and tranquil woodlands to the snow-covered peaks of the Japanese Alps. Around Tokyo, parks, rivers and estuaries provide excellent introductions to Japan’s birdlife, while inland forests support a rich variety of woodland species throughout the seasons.
In the mountains, ancient forests and alpine landscapes provide habitat for a range of forest birds and montane specialties, while a visit to Jigokudani offers the unforgettable spectacle of the famous Snow Monkeys bathing in steaming natural hot springs. Honshu perfectly combines outstanding birding with some of Japan’s most scenic landscapes and cultural highlights.
Miyake-jima & the Izu Islands
Located south of Tokyo, the volcanic Izu Islands are renowned for their combination of island endemics, productive pelagic birding and dramatic ocean scenery. Miyake-jima’s forests support sought-after species including Izu Thrush, Owston’s Tit and Japanese Wood Pigeon, while surrounding coastal habitats provide excellent opportunities for seabirds.
The waters surrounding the islands are among Japan’s premier pelagic birding locations, offering opportunities to encounter Japanese Murrelet, shearwaters, storm-petrels, jaegers and, depending on the season, albatrosses. The unique blend of endemic landbirds and exceptional seabird diversity makes the Izu Islands an unforgettable part of any Japan birding adventure.
Ryukyu Islands
Stretching over 1,000 kilometres between Kyushu and Taiwan, the subtropical Ryukyu Islands are home to many of Japan’s most sought-after endemic birds and wildlife. Ancient evergreen forests, mangroves and rugged coastlines support an extraordinary concentration of species found nowhere else on Earth.
Birders visiting the region may encounter iconic species such as Lidth’s Jay, Okinawa Rail, Okinawa Woodpecker, Amami Woodcock, Ryukyu Robin and Japanese (Pryer’s) Scops Owl, while the islands are also home to several endemic mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The Ryukyus provide a striking contrast to northern Japan, showcasing lush subtropical habitats and a completely different suite of birds.
Kyushu
Japan’s southernmost main island is renowned for one of the world’s greatest winter birding spectacles. Each year, the Izumi Plains become a sanctuary for thousands of migratory cranes, including the vast majority of the world’s Hooded Cranes and White-naped Cranes, alongside smaller numbers of Common, Sandhill and occasionally other rare crane species.
Beyond the famous crane flocks, Kyushu’s diverse wetlands, estuaries and coastal habitats attract an impressive variety of wintering waterbirds, gulls, shorebirds and raptors. Offshore waters provide excellent opportunities for pelagic birding, including the rare Japanese Murrelet, while nearby forests and farmland support a wide range of woodland and open-country birds.
Combining spectacular wildlife concentrations, productive coastal birding and comfortable travel, Kyushu is an essential destination on any comprehensive winter birding tour of Japan.
